JAKIM Handbook 2010 classifies E163 as Mushbooh, halal as a 100% dry colour but doubtful in liquid form where the solvent must also be halal. MUIS marks E163 as syubhah, noting it is extracted from grape-skin and red cabbage by means of water, methanol, or ethanol. Because the carrier or solvent is not disclosed on the label, E163 is doubtful by default.
